Nick Shirley Exposed $250 Million in Fraud by America's 250th Birthday

July 4th Fireworks over Washington, D.C. in 2008 (Library of Congress)
Two hundred and fifty years ago, the Second Continental Congress decided they had enough of being taxed and mistreated by a government that didn’t answer to them. They signed a document that could have cost them their lives, and they built a country on a bold idea: power belongs to ordinary people, and ordinary people get to hold it accountable. This week, America turns 250 years old.
In America’s 250th year, Nick Shirley used just a camera and the freedoms we all share to coincidentally uncover over $250 million in fraud against the taxpayers the founders wanted to protect.
Nick’s investigations totaling a quarter-billion dollars in fraud show what America was meant to make possible. A free citizen can film an empty daycare that’s getting public money, and within weeks, the federal government freezes funding, agents move in, and Congress holds hearings. A free press (which California is arguably trying to take away) and a citizenry that refuses to look away did the work, exactly as the founders hoped 250 years ago.
Every generation in America has had people who saw something wrong and refused to ignore it. Nick is one of this generation’s example, and the fact that he can speak up on camera without needing permission is the gift the founders left for all of us. So use it. The founders would recognize Nick. They were pamphleteers and troublemakers who believed government should serve the people, not the other way around. In America, accountability has always started with regular people who decide to put a stop to fraud.
So happy birthday, America. Two and a half centuries in, the country still produces citizens who will walk into hostile rooms with nothing but a camera and the belief that taxpayers deserve better. The fact that $250 million was uncovered in the 250th year is just a coincidence. What matters is that this country is run by its people. Get out there and fight against fraud, but also celebrate this great and beautiful country.
Happy 250th Birthday America!

California Puts the First Amendment on Trial

California AB 2626 or Stop Nick Shirley Act Hearing (Nick Shirley on X)
Just days before the country’s 250th birthday, regular people spoke up at a Sacramento hearing on the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ to remind state leaders about the purpose of the First Amendment. Nick shared footage from the hearing, make sure you watch it below.
Darren Stallcup, who spoke at the hearing, explained the timeline clearly. AB 2624 only came up after Nick Shirley and other independent journalists uncovered what he described as millions of dollars stolen from American families. He told the committee that the bill would now threaten and target those exposing wrongdoing. He called it “an attack on freedom of speech and freedom of the press,” and warned senators that “our founding fathers as well as the American people are watching you.” He ended with a suggestion: “This Sacramento swamp needs a good draining.”
He made sure to clarify his point. “This is not an attack on immigrants,” he said. “I love people of all races and religions. This is about fraud and corruption.” He reminded the committee that the missing money affected both Democrat and Republican families.
Tara Thornton from Freedom Angels said she hadn’t planned to speak but felt it was necessary. She explained that the bill targets a common investigative tool: publicly recording government-contracted facilities. This same method has uncovered fraud in hospice, welfare, health, and education programs funded by taxpayers. Her main concern was the bill’s broad “intent to harm” standard, which could be interpreted to include anything that hurts someone’s reputation or finances. This could go beyond investigations and threaten protected reporting. If written this broadly, the standard could protect wrongdoers and hide the stories that would reveal them.
The founders created the First Amendment for situations like this. They had lived under a government that punished people for speaking out, so they built a country where citizens could hold officials accountable without needing approval. As the nation celebrates their courage this week, California is testing how much of their vision remains. The people at the hearing understand what’s at stake, and so does Nick, who keeps filming public buildings and challenging the state to explain what it wants to keep secret.
America marks its 250th birthday this week. After watching the hearing above, ask yourself: Is California upholding the freedoms this anniversary celebrates? Let us know what you think by replying to this email.
